Iran and China Discuss Enhanced Cooperation in Digital Economy and AI
Tehran, May 9, 2025– Iran's Minister of ICT, met with the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Tehran, Zong Piwu, today to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation and implementing strategic agreements between the two nations.
The meeting, as reported by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s Public Relations Office, focused on expanding collaboration across various sectors including communications, information technology, the digital economy, communications infrastructure, and the development of artificial intelligence.
Minister Hashemi emphasized the historical ties and civilizational background shared by Iran and China, referencing the ancient Silk Road, and stressed the need to leverage mutual capabilities to achieve strategic development goals. He reiterated Iran's firm commitment to operationalizing existing agreements, particularly in the ICT sector, and underscored the importance of implementing the provisions outlined in the previously signed joint cooperation document between the respective Ministries of Communications.
Hashemi also announced his upcoming official visit to China, characterizing it as a significant opportunity to advance joint initiatives. He outlined priority areas for future discussions, including the development of artificial intelligence, computing infrastructure, satellite constellations, and data transit. "Especially in the field of artificial intelligence, both countries possess significant capabilities that can form the basis for collaborative projects," the Minister stated.
Ambassador Zong Piwu acknowledged the deep-rooted relationship between Iran and China, commended Iran's progress in the field of communications and information technology, and emphasized the continuation and expansion of bilateral cooperation despite external challenges and pressures. He echoed the need for developing cooperation in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence, as crucial for the future and welcomed the Iranian Minister's upcoming visit to China. The meeting signals a renewed commitment to fostering a stronger strategic partnership between Iran and China in the rapidly evolving landscape of the digital economy and technological innovation.
