Iran's First Vice President Highlights Nation's Strategic Role in Cyber Security and Digital Economy
Iranian First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref underscored the critical importance of advancing Iran's position in the rapidly evolving field of ICT.
Tehran-According to the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of ICT, in a meeting held on Saturday evening, Aref articulated a clear vision for the future of Iran’s ICT sector, calling for robust measures to strengthen the nation’s role in advanced technologies. He emphasized that cybersecurity must be prioritized, stating, "Cybersecurity is a very important issue for us. Make serious investments in this field and invite elite professors and academics to cooperate." This call to action reflects a growing recognition of the need for enhanced security measures in an increasingly digital world.
The First Vice President outlined two vital roles for the ICT ministry: creating new employment opportunities and increasing the sector's contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He noted that legislation mandates a 20 percent employment target within the ICT sector, which translates to 200,000 jobs out of every million new positions created. Aref expressed optimism about the potential for even greater employment outcomes in the digital economy, provided that concerted efforts are made.
Aref also highlighted the importance of international cooperation, stating, "Our advantage in this sector is the skilled, outstanding, and motivated human resources that we have in the country." He pointed out that despite the challenges posed by international sanctions, Iran has emerged as a leader in the region, boasting a robust scientific base. He encouraged leveraging this strength, particularly in collaboration with neighboring countries. "The strategy of the government is to expand regional cooperation, especially with neighboring countries," he added, citing Iran's active participation in organizations such as the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), BRICS, and the Eurasian Economic Union.
In discussing the role of ICT diplomacy, Aref noted its potential to enhance political diplomacy, referencing successful outcomes observed in Africa. He reiterated the importance of cyber defense, urging the ministry to pursue initiatives in collaboration with universities and other relevant ministries. "Support research and studies in this area, and advance the work in cooperation with elite professors and academics," he stressed.
The First Vice President also commended the efforts of the Iranian Space Agency, remarking on the significance of courage in space activities. "The spirit of courage in space activities is very important, and we support this area with all our might. The strategy of the government is that we want to be a pioneer in this area," he stated, expressing pride in the nation's ambitions to explore higher orbits.
During the meeting, ICT Minister Hashemi provided a comprehensive report on the ministry's ongoing initiatives. He emphasized the need to accelerate the development process, outlining key priorities that range from the rollout of the 5G communication network to the expansion of technological diplomacy. Hashemi articulated a vision for achieving a 10 percent share of the digital economy in the national GDP, aligning with the objectives set forth in the Seventh Development Plan.
Highlighting the importance of e-government, Hashemi indicated that the ministry is working to define a coherent package and perspective on processes and systems in collaboration with the Public Administrative and Recruitment Organization. He acknowledged the public's demand for improved quality in communication networks and greater regulatory transparency, asserting, "Meeting this demand is seriously on the agenda."
The Minister also reported on significant progress towards the development of the 5G network, noting that the auction of 3600 MHz frequency sources is imminent. "Considering the numerous stakeholders that this frequency has, its release indicates the formation of consensus and unparalleled support," he remarked, suggesting a collaborative effort among various sectors to facilitate this advancement.
Furthermore, Hashemi identified smart industry as a primary focus for the ministry. He noted that this initiative arose from the ICT Ministry's active involvement in addressing energy imbalances, culminating in a comprehensive plan developed over four months of diligent work.
